The Gift                            Page 15:

“Tuna casserole!” Jelly quipped, squinting her eyes in disgust while her cheeks turned a darker shade of pink. She slid into her seat realizing she had blurted out the wrong words in haste. “Oh gosh, I mean, tuna casserole; wow! That’s my favorite.”

    “Is there something wrong, Jelly?”

“No, Mom, why do you ask?”

“Well,” Annie began sarcastically, with her I-am-older-than you superior look, “You hate tuna for one thing.”

“Yeah, you always told me you hated tuna casserole,” Winnie sputtered her words together as she chewed. “You said it tasted like melted crayons.”

“Okay,” Carol said in suspicion. “Jelly, what do you want? Something is up, I can tell.”

    “Ma!”

“Well, normally Jelly, you bring a book to read at the dinner table. and, I thought your favorite food was spaghetti?” Carol asked, shaking her head in suspicion. “I don’t see a book anywhere so, what’s up?”

Jelly gave Annie a quick, dirty look, and then noticed that her sister had left over food on her chin. This gave Jelly so much pleasure because she decided she wouldn’t tell Annie. Heck, she can go the rest of the night with that all over her face for all I care, ha!

“What is it? Pick on Jelly night? I just sat down.”

“Here it comes,” Annie said sarcastically. She took a sip of milk then choked on her words. “i can feel it, the poor me routine,” she finished  regaining her composure. “Mom, you are right, Jelly wants something.”
