The Gift            page 1

“Yep, just another average day, with average people, driving average cars, in an average neighborhood,” Jelly Douglas quipped, sitting on her front porch feeling average. “And, to think, this is just the beginning of summer. Am I having fun yet?” she asked herself.

Jelly sighed, placed her elbows on her thighs and rested her chin in the palms of her hands. “Nothing exciting ever happens in this neighborhood.” Her green eyes suddenly darted across the street. susie Jenkins the mail-lady was delivering mail. Hmm, she thought, glancing at her watch, “11:00 a.m., yep, Susie’s right on time. What did I say, average? Blah!”

Jelly wiped the perspiration off her forehead and though that it was seemly hot for the beginning of summer. she happened to notice Mrs. Hyde across the street. a skinny, wrinkly faced, suspicious woman was already keeping a keen eye on the neighborhood by pretending to sweep off her porch. Her mother had told her once that because Mrs. Hyde was so preoccupied with the local gossip; she called her the town crier, and said, “Mrs.. Hyde is just wearing away all the cement on her porch, just by sweeping it as much as she does.”
